2005 Chevy Impala: Heater blower stopped working. Heat still works just does not blow out. Can this be a belt?

Asked by btice62 Jan 02, 2013 at 03:00 PM about the 2005 Chevrolet Impala FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Blower was making a sequelling noise then just stopped working.  Wondering if it could be a belt or the motor and the cost it should be.

Most likely the bushings went dry and wore out. Replace the blower motor. $40-$96 on RockAuto.com

First, see if the blower motor operates on high only. If so, the resister is bad. If not, you need to check which circuit your blower motor is on and see what, if any other loads (switches) are on that circuit. I know GM has an issue with its ignition switches. The blower motor circuit may be connected to the ignition switch (because it is not a constant 12V source, but instead only operates when the ignition is on or switched to ACC). If it is, the problem may be a connection at the ignition switch. I believe I ran into that problem on a 2001 Impala with a 3.4L. Check a wiring diagram. Good luck.

So, my blower stopped working. Then it worked again. Then it stopped. Worked. Finally stopped all together. So I research it online and see "change resistor" then "change blower" did both because I had a junk car in the back with the same parts. Nada. Decide to change out the control module in the dash. After a ton of work, finally get it out and about to put the replacement in and I hear a jiggling sound in the old one. Decide to open it up. GUESS WHAT IS INSIDE!?!? A freaking centipede. Dried out, dead and in 4 pieces! And touching different solder points. Clean out the electronic board, reinstall old blower, resister and module. BAM, instant working system. Really...a freaking bug in the system! Just my horror story.
