I suddenly lost all the oil from my Toyota Corolla,1998. The cap and dipstick are secure. Car has been running fine until this happened yesterday.

Asked by Jeliz1923 Aug 11, 2015 at 11:42 AM about the 1998 Toyota Corolla CE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I got home after driving approximately 50 miles in heavy traffic, I notices a trail of oil drops. Looked under my car and a large amount of oil had leaked out of my car in the short time (1-2 minutes) I had been parked in the drive way. The oil filter is still there and as far as I can tell it isn't loose. This morning I did the "dip stick check" and there appears to be no oil at all.

It is possible that during the last oil change the oil filter gasket stuck to the oil filter mounting boss. If this happens and an oil filter with another gasket is installed on top of the gasket that is stuck to the filter mounting boss,it will blow out causing a serious oil leak. I am unable to determine if this happened to your car, but it is worth investigating. Was your car recently serviced?

Good question Bob. Knowing that will help us Jeliz. Any chance you ran over something..a curb..rock...anything and punched a hole in the pan or filter? And don't even start it until you get oil back in

Also, are you 100% sure this is motor oil..not transmission fluid? It's black or (if new) amber..or red/pink? Did you pull the dipstick on the drivers side or passenger side?

Thanks guys for all your concern. My father was a helicopter mechanic for the US Army for 30 years. He was always able to fix any car problems! I'm sure it's the oil. I had trouble with a transmission one time and would know the appearance of the fluid--I was refilling the stupid thing at least once a week. I had the oil changed about a month ago. Drove from Denver to Southern California without trouble. I don't remember hitting any bumps or holes since my arrival in SoCal.
