It is a computer that controls all the engines functions. All cars went to a OBDII computer in 1996, before that there was the OBD1 computer which started in 1981. When something is not right with the engine, or transmission, a parameter is out of range with a sensor indicating a problem, thus then a code is set into the computer so when you scan the vehicle from the ALDL port with a automotive scanner, you pick up the code, codes to know where and what to look at for repair.
