Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Water pump went bad, so I replaced timing belt, idler pulleys, water pump, valve cover
gasket, plug wires. 2001 camry 4 cylinder. engine turns over fine but no hint of firing.
Checked plug wires & getting spark. Rechecked timing with compression tester, looks
good. ground wires and crankcase position sensor all connected. Any ideas? Thanks

I think you have a good idea since you rechecked the timing. Personally, I'd take off the timing cover, remove a few spark plugs so you can turn the engine by hand to see if the marks match up.

Do the simple things first. Check your fuses and make sure that your relays are working. Sounds like the fuel pump is not getting power.

Update - I used the wrong mark on the cam spocket. My Haynes book showed setups for both the circle and the notch. I had used the circle mark - needed to use the notch. Guess I need big color photos instead of fussy b&w or artist drawings. Thanks for the help, all is running well.

Congratulations on your repair. Next time anyone changes a timing belt or chain....line up the timing marks BEFORE you take things a part.....this way...you know what things look like at the start of the repair. Also....use the camera feature on your cell phone. Take pictures of the assembly before disassembly of any system or sub-system on your car. Good Luck on your next repair. Tony C

I have the same problem! Timing belt had broke. I lined up the cam hole on the inner area of the cam to the cam cap mark. So you are saying I'm supposed to align that top outer notch on the cam to a cover point ? I'll check it out now. Thanks
