Whirring sound

Asked by Tyler Apr 28, 2011 at 12:05 PM about the 2000 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just noticed this after making a couple hundred mile road trip, my car makes a whirring noise from the rear. It is directly related to speed (gear, throttle, engine speed all irrelevant), at around 45 mph it is loudest then it gets quieter until about 70. The tires are properly inflated and I can find nothing in the treads. What might it be?

Sounds like a wheel bearing. Sometime can be a tire. If rotating the tires has no effect on noise, then probably is bearing. Sometimes a bearing can be further diagnosed by swerving right or left. This will apply and relieve pressure on bearing, therefore increasing or decreasing noise. Sometimes the beaing can be heard or felt while spinning wheel manually in air.

note: leave wheel on car during spin test. lift car until wheel is "in air"
