Car making a loud rattling noise

Asked by Devonte Mar 28, 2020 at 08:03 AM about the 1999 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The other day I was driving and as I was braking I
accidentally switched the gear shift from drive to
park before the car could come to a complete stop.
My car has been making a loud rattling sound every
since even when it’s in park does anyone know
what my problem is ??

I think you broke the parking pin , I would not trust it in park anymore it may roll away , If that's what it is the tranny will probably have to come out , get it fixed or use the emergency brake , Do not trust the parking pin ! !

Thanks for the advice ! Do you still think it’s the parking pin even if it was on a hill when it happened? the car remained in the park position, it was once I put it in drive to pull back off is when the noise started to occur and every ride since

I've no idea what it actually is , from what you said I can only guess , what ever is making the noise may stop but I just wouldn't take the chance of the thing rolling away . The parking pin is only a little clip type thingy

Try to pin point where the rattle is coming from the eng or tranny. Explain any attributes like more rattling occurs when the engine revs or you go faster or it gets quiet in reverse. If its coming from the tranny, you best be draining and refilling it via the drain plug. Look for metal in the fluid with a magnet.
