When is it necessary to replaced the Mcpherson struts, if ever?

Dear Lorie-- You may well need new struts, but there is a simple test my father taught me. I had just spent too much money replacing struts because a gas station in Tennessee told me I would not make it to Florida unless I got new ones. Anyone ever heard that line before? My father took me to his car, pushed down real hard on the front right corner and then counted the number of times the car bounced up and down. If it was three times or less, he said, you don't need them. More than three and you reach into the wallet and get the repair. Do the same test on all four corners.
