engine noise

Asked by Quint Dec 27, 2015 at 05:35 PM about the 1997 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Sounds like rattling when my car is idling, but when
I hit the gas it stops. My oil pressure light flickers
when I'm pushing the accelerator but not when it
idles at 1500rpm or less. Just suddenly started out
of nowhere. No loss of power but from the time it
started to the time I got home to park it (15 miles
at most and babied it) it was significantly worse.
What could be causing this?

If this just started doing this, possible it may be saved. There is a oil pressure issue that needs immediate attention. May be in the oil pump, may be the oil pressure relief valve, I wouldn't know sitting here. Suggest having it towed to a shop to be looked at.

Have you checked the oil level in the engine?

When checking the engine oil, smell it, feel it between you fingers. Does it smell like gasoline? Does the oil sample on your fingers feel gritty? If the oil sample seems OK. Start the engine and see if you can pinpoint the noise. With a short piece of wood...use it like a stethoscope by placing one end next to your best ear and the other end against various parts of the engine. Stay away from any rotating parts with this stick. If this procedure sound too risky....then as noted by Rowefast above....have it towed and evaluated by a competent Auto Technician.

There is a hint of gasoline in the oil, and it's not gritty. The oil level is right at full on the dipstick.
