95 manual 2.2 and just got a new clutch but it is not shifting right? I have to go into neutral when shifting from 1st to 2nd and its very sloppy also!? Maybe the shifter bushing?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Before the clutch was done I was having difficulty shifting into 1st, sometimes
2nd and reverse. 3rd, 4th and 5th- no issues. It was slipping though. But now it
is very strange- I have to go into neutral in order to go from 1st to 2nd. When it
is in 1st or 2nd it moves way too much while in gear- the shifter has way too
much play.

If these issues evolved as a result of the clutch job...one might conclude that repair is the cause. One would start the diagnosis with a check of the Tranny Fluid Level. Then a visual inspection of Motor/Trans Mounts....Shifter Cables is included.

Bleed the hydraulic clutch system and check the fluid level. If there is a mechanical adjustment you may need to adjust it so that the clutch is fully disengaged when the clutch pedal is pushed all the way down.

When you say the tranny is sloppy, that leads me to believe that it's your tranny that's getting bad. If you have had a whole new clutch put in and it still has shifting issues, I would suspect it's the transmission. If after you have done what Full of Regrets has suggested and you still have those issues, I fear it's the transmission itself. Believe it or not, some if not all of those manual transmissions take auto tranny fluid. I had one blow up on me because the previous shop that worked on it, had filled it with 90 weight gear oil. Once cold weather hit, the transmission blew. If you have had your tranny serviced by back yard mechanics in the past, they may have made that very mistake.
