2005 outback losing power

The vehicle began to lose power under load and up hills. Idle stayed smooth for a week or two. Also produces a loud metalic ratcheting sound at around 4700 RPM. Is not fuel filter, MAS. Mechanics have had it for two full days and don't have a clue.

You'll have to find wrenches familiar with the turbo iteration. Loss of power at speed often points to an old MAF sensor, but your high rpm chatter suggests rod knock from prior abuse. Too tough without eyes on it....

The problem was the timing. A timing cog on the cam was failing. The sound was the timing belt tensioner trying to restore the timing to the proper settings. Pricey fix, but glad to know what is was. Thanks to all for your advice and suggestions.

Subie's tensioners use a small internal hydraulic shock that keep the t-belt at tension. Occasionally the shock's oil seal will leak, bleeding out the oil and resulting in flop. What you're hearing is the loose t- belt whacking its outer case...NEVER a good situation. Good that you didn't bend a valve!
