I own a 2005 outback and have all
the same issues. ABS light has been
on, cruise light comes on, speed
sensor light as well. I have been told
the ABS was $2300 to repair alone.
Recently the check engine light
comes on and it is for a transmission
sensor. The car does act like it does
not want to shift gears and acts
sluggish every once and while (it is a
automatic) had it check and it is a
transmission sensor. Yesterday the
power steering went out suddenly
and the brakes as well. All the fluids
and battery were fine. I got the brakes
working for the car to be drivable to
try to get it home but it did start
jerking on me and slowing down then
suddenly stop. I could not get it into
park and had to use the emergency
brake. The car would not turn back
over but with that said all the lights,
radio, every thing else worked. Also
want to mention I have smelled gas
around the car recently but couldn’t
find any gas leaks. The gas cap was
not bad either. Any ideas or
suggestions?

My suggestion is to find another car. I doubt yours is worth repairing.

Does sound like a death march, eh? Most 2005-2009 are biting the bullet here in New England, so my buddy may be correct, although there's no way the ABS system could eat $2.3k in repairs. It's the old, dirty, failing 4EAT trans that worries me, as they're impossible to resurrect once clogged with 15 yrs gunk. (Disclaimer: I have a couple of 2017 OB Prems w/ EyeSight c. $19k here in Boston for sale. You're welcome to either.) Oh: the gas smell is probably from cracks in the small connector tubes sitting atop the motor when started cold. Eventually they'll weep continuously, risking a flaming BBQ. Nee s'more advice?
