I have an '06 Chevy Cobalt LS with an automatic transmission and this morning the check engine light came on and the transmission won't shift. With 140k is it worth rebuilding the transmission?

I wouldn't rebuild it, but used ones should be everywhere. Check out what the car is worth running, compare that with what it will cost to get it mobile again and weigh that against what you will spend if you get a different car. Let the arithmetic be your guide.

Having said that, do some proper diagnostics first to find out what is actually wrong with your car. It might be something minor.
