What would cause smoke under the hood of my' 02 grand prix se after changing the alternator. Also, the rpm jumps to 4 then goes back down over and over.

Be specific .. does it smell like burning ... is it more of a vapor? Why was the alternator changed. Did that solve the problem ,, How long has it been since the alternator was changed? I suspect (like Tom) something related to the alternator is the problem. DO NOT RUN THE ENGINE LONGER THEN REQUIRED TO DETERMINE THE SOURCE Better yet ... don't run it at all until you have a mechanic look at it

It smells electrical. The engine doesn't turn over dash lights come on and smoke starts
