I have a 2008 pontiac grand prix. Water over heats into the resivor after we drive the car the car.when its parked. But the temperature is in the safe zone when we drive it. What could cause this? Head gasket?

When at idle it over heats check fans behind radiator to insure they are coming on.

this isn't the 5.6 liter V8 is it?

Not sure about your particular choreography, but fan is supposed to be running as long as the temperature is above or near boiling temperature....and continue to stay running until the coolant temperature reaches an acceptable temperature~ I'd check the fine print on your cooling system in your owners manual~
