the transmission is making a whirring noise (sounds like airplane taking off ) when were driving, what do you suggest? could it be the tranny?

Yes. There's a shaft inside the transmission that wasn't made properly and the splines break off due to the metal not being properly hardened. It's a common GM failure. Your transmission will no longer shift into overdrive and you will not have torque converter clutch lock in. You will also notice a decrease in gas mileage. To confirm this is what has happened drive with the shifter in 3 instead of D. This will prevent the upshift all together and you will not hear the whine. To have this repaired it will cost about $1500! You can continue to drive this way without doing any damage to the vehicle. Hope that helps! Jim
