2002 Town Car down shifting going up hill

going down hill I let off the gas, going up the hill, I put the pedal down a little  
@ about 40 mph car jerks like it can not figure out what gear to be in

Sorry meant OSS (Output Shaft Speed) sensor, it's part of the transmission's electronic control system, namely it "sends a signal to the powertrain control module (PCM) to indicate transmission output shaft speed. The OSS sensor is used for torque converter clutch (TCC) control, shift scheduling and to determine electronic pressure control (EPC)." Without it the tranny will hunt for the proper gear to be in. From your description it sounds like you have erratic shifting...?
