Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 98 audi a4 but this can technically fall under any car with a front axles. I was on the highway today and my car was vibrating in the front passenger side. When i checked the axle by grabbing the bar between points and trying to shake it i got a fair amount of play from both ends would this mean the bearings are bad in it ? the other one is pretty solid so i figure this must be my culprit for my vibrations.

yea my tires are all equal i do know one has a slight flat spot but its not really made much vibration. i had originally put a brand new axle on that side of the car but it was on there while i had 2 bad bearings in my differential so i think it killed the axle's cv joints due to the amount of vibration it was putting out before i could replace the bearings. I figure the axle should have no play at all and i guess i was right .

Before you spend a bunch of cash, I own an A6, First, turn your wheel all the way and drive in a tight circle each direction, if its anything in the drive train, you will hear it( cv, axle, bearings). I am guessing a split seam in a tire. Swap your tires front to back keeping them on the same sides, there is a good chance the vibration in the front will be gone, so replace the rear tires.

Had similar problems but mechanics could not find anything wrong with my A4 until someone advised me to change the driving shaft end that connects to the gearbox. The problem was fixed1

My problem was both cv being damaged from the vibration and bad diff bearings. replaced both and it went away.
