99 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Gauges die after start, ok if key just on

Asked by JeepWife Mar 01, 2016 at 07:26 PM about the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Our 99 Grand Cherokee sat for 2 weeks while we
were on vacation. When my husband went to drive
it for the 1st time again, he started it up and the
gauges one by one died. Vehicle runs and drives
fine. Unplugged IAC, TP, IAT and CTS one at a time
while running to see if that affected the gauges -
they did not. Battery connections are good. Have
not had a chance to check CPS yes. Odometer is
stuck, gauges all at 0, but everythings else in car
works. Also, with key on (before start) gauges work
and read correctly, but once we start it the gauges
stop. Any thoughts?

IMO,if the gauges read right when key is in the on position then go bad when engine is running, there is a grounding issue in the cluster board,or could be your ignition switch.

Thanks, we'll check into both of those. New symptom: Gauges work momentarily when headlights are turned on, but only sometimes. Multi-function switch issue?
