stalls after refuel

Asked by Michael Dec 02, 2010 at 10:01 PM about the 2002 Ford Explorer XLS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I Have A Ford Explorer 2002 4.0 Runs Fine For About An Hour After Getting Gas And Then Will Stall And After Sitting For About An Hour It Runs Fine. Dose This Sound Like The Fuel Strainer Is Clogging( I.e. Debris In The Fuel Tank). I Have Already Replaced The Inline Fuel Filter And Swapped Relays As Well As Tripping And Resetting The Collision Cut Off Switch. This Is The Second Time It Has Happen And Both Times Are After Refueling.

I read somewhere that a faulty gas cap can cause some weird situations like what you're experiencing. Might want to check it out if you haven't done so alreday..

There might be water water in the bottom of the gas tank. Check for a rusty tiny hole somewhere close to the top. I had a F150 that had a hole at the top and had trouble when driving around a corner or short incline. I filled up after a shift but filled it up too much and the gasoline above this hole leak dripped on the road; got written up by the fire department. RH
