Maybe the spring or seat mechanism or seat frame is broken. You will need to remove the seat to inspect it.

Can I get a diagram of the mechanisms that are below the seat, would you know of a site for me to get the diagram from? Thanks

I don't, but once you have the seat removed, you will be able to tell.
