Cooling system for 02 Ford Escape

It started overheating and I stopped
and topped it off with
antifreeze/coolant. I ran the heater full
blast all the way home and it didn't
overheat until I turned the heat off. It
was making a squealing fan noise
after it overheated. I think
thermostat??

When it overheated did coolant spray on the fans? That might be the noise. If you had to top off the coolant, I suspect you have a leak somewhere. A low coolant level will give you an overheat condition. If you want to replace the thermostat for piece of mind, it isn't all that expensive.
