changed cap and router on son's 93 ranger, router was broke, blew black smoke and stopped running. Now it will turn over but no start and I smell gas

Are you getting fire to the plugs? Have you removed and inspect the spark plugs? Were plug wires installed in correct location on cap? These would be some things I would look into.
