Transmission / transfer case

Asked by Guru99PZYN Oct 15, 2020 at 09:55 AM about the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71 Crew Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 246 transfer case in my 2005 1500
silverado 4x4.  I pulled the transfer case off and
had a bunch of transmission fluid come out. I
know it's transmission fluid because it was red and
the transfer case oil is blue.  Is this a symptom of a
bad output shaft seal on my tyranny or is the fluid
supposed to be in there?

Yup, most likely a bad seal.

You ever do the seal repair while it is still installed on the car. I haven't looked at it that much. Seems like there is a extension housing on the rear of the transmission. Don't see an actual seal from my angle, but I may have to remove some stuff to get to it.
