1999 Z71 transmission or transfer case problem

I was driving down the highway at about 55 or 60
mph and I lost all transmission function. This is in
a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado Z71 LS with automatic
4 wheel drive. I can feel the transmission shift
when I put it in gear but it acts like it is in neutral
and I can hear a faint clater noise when I press the
gas pedal. Would this be a transfer case problem
or a problem with the transmission?  Any and all
information or knowledge will be helpful. Thank
you in advance.

I do believe it is in the trany. There is a pilot shaft that snaps in the trany in those years. Of course it is redesigned now.
