There is no direct connection between the transmission and the engine sump. You could get ATF in the coolant due to a defective radiator.

Has to be the radiator allowing them to mix, most automatic transmission vehicles have coolers that are part of the radiator. Same idea as the engine coolant circulate the ATF through the radiator with fan and everything else designed to keep temps down. Some vehicles use the same setup with engine oil so you have oil atf and coolant all pumping through that rad in different reservoirs of the rad. Although rare you must have issues with the oil and ATF reservoirs in your radiator allowing them to emulsify.
