where to start looking to fix a 1994 ford escort lx 1.9L motor that dose not run at all

The first thing I would look at is the timing belt. It's a little difficult to get to but not too bad. If you take the 2 nuts off of the front of the cover and pull it back a little, you should be able to see the belt. Have someone crank the engine for you and watch to see if the belt moves. Don't hold on to the cover with your hands! Just watch. The timing belt is most common. Fuel pump, coil pack and battery - in that order. Don't replace parts until you know what's wrong. That can get expensive and still not fix your car.
