1985 Corvette Starting Issue

Asked by RFVette Aug 23, 2019 at 10:53 AM about the 1985 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Corvette won't start.  New battery... turn the key, everything lights up and the
starter clicks like it's engaging, but won't turn over the engine.  Sounds like a
weak or dead battery issue,  but wait!!!  When I hook up a jumper cable from
the engine frame (alternator mount) to the negative cable/battery post, the
engine turns over and the car starts!  Bad battery negative cable, fusible link,
or some relay switch?  I got a new set of battery cables, but haven't installed
them yet... I want to see if it could be an additional issue before I crawl under
the car.

Oh, by the way, I cleaned the battery connections between the cable and battery... scrubbed them nice and clean, and made sure the terminal connections are tight. New battery, too. Dash says the voltage is 14.2 volts when I got the car started. Removed the jumper cable, and the reading didn't change.
