Yes, apparently there was a factory option for a exterior vinyl application to the removable hardtop. See: http://www.corvsport.com/Corvette/C3/1972/C3_1972_VIN.html (just search for "vinyl" on that page)

If you have trouble finding the relevant text, its: "Vinyl Covering (for Auxiliary Hardtop) (C08) - This option provided an external vinyl liner application to the auxiliary hardtop. The vinyl covering provided a faux convertible top appearance even when the hardtop was mounted on the car."
