Aftermarket radio install

Asked by Philman2000 Feb 06, 2012 at 09:16 PM about the 1989 Chevrolet Camaro RS Coupe RWD

Question type: Car Customization

I installed a sony radio into a 89 camaro rs and in order to get the radio to power on I had to
connect the ignition wire and 12 volt battery wire and both of the wires on the new adapter
all together to get it to power on.  If I connected everything per the wire diagrams then I get
nothing. The role radio is the original.  In addition when I turn the power off and back on all
radio settings have been reset, for instance the time.  Any ideas?

Any help is appreciated.

Phil

you might have put in the wrong wires... check the diagram again, it might be a different diagram for what the stock radio has... try tapping the new radio's power wire with the old unit's power wire so everytime you turn your radio of, it will just sync, not reset... it resets because everytime you crank the ignition, it also resets the electrical distribution...

red needs to go to a constant 12v power supply, yellow needs to go to your ignition, you can connect red directly to the battery if you want and it sounds like you already have yellow in the right spot

Devin is right.... It has to have a constant power supply to keep the setting when it's turned off. You could also just run the red wire to the fuse box.

I will try what was recommended and update this post. Thanks to everyone for the feedback. One thing to note is when I first connected it the way it seemed appropriate per the wire diagrams it sounded as if the cd reader was spinning for a few seconds and then stop, then nothing. Thanks Phil
