87 Monte Carlo starter
I replaced my starter on my 87 Monte Carlo and
when I start it the car wines an it don't turn over
until 5/6 times if trying to start it. As well I'm very
confused on doing shimmy on the starter. What is
the correct way to shimmy the starter? Please help
me

Was the new starter, rebuilt/re-manufactured unit, if so take it back try another one. Other-wise make sure all battery terminal wires are good, connections tight, starter fully seated & tight, The starter itself may not be good, if its a used/rebuilt one. Bendix gear may not be working correctly. If it is the same starter (look by comparing to old unit) It should not need any shims.

The whining is likely the starter spinning in place, when the starter gets power the pinion/bendix gear will move forward to engage the flywheel. If not then it spins in place. I would check flyweel for missing teeth, if this did not happen with old starter then flywheel is likely fine but worth a check if it was having this issue beforehand too.
