This doesn't sound fun, smoke from under the dash means there is a short somewhere. Would have blown a fuse.

Fuse boxes are on passenger side front kick panel, there is an access door there, and under the hood on passenger side.

I believe the positive cable from the battery runs to the one under the hood, but what do you mean changes fuse on passenger side? Did you find a blown fuse or something?
