My check engine light will not stay off... indicates a "gas evaporation" issue. Mechanic can't find anything wrong with it... any ideas?

Hmmmm, I don't remember the code. No, I haven't has a smoke machine check the system. I probably have to take it back to Dodge for them to do that... Is that my next logical step? Thanks.

Check all the hoses fro the evap system, there should be a charcoal canister under the truck and a purge solenoid in the engine bay... hoses running between and to and from the gas tank. Any one of the hoses could be cracked, disconnected or missing completely

Justin is correct for potential causes of an EVAP code. See what you can find, erase the code to turn off the MIL lamp and see if it holds. Sometimes there are leaks you can't find and if the light keeps coming back on, then its smoke test time for sure. Good luck!

Another cause I've seen is gas tank rusted through. This usually happens on the top of tank.

I've had the same issue with my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500. The engine light had been on for nearly two years. Took it to various mechanics who all said what yours said - evap system. Changed the gas cap, it still came back on. We now want to sell the truck (to get a bigger one) and took it to the DODGE DEALER. They smoked it and said there were three hoses with large tears, that seemed to explain the issue, but the light came back on within two days as usual. Took it back to Dodge and now they said it needed a "Leak Detection Pump" which they do not have in stock, and, in fact, it has been DISCONTINUED so there is no way of getting the part and they say no way of turning the light off. This seems like a bunch of b.s. to me. Why can't they turn the light off? Who's ever going to want to buy the truck now with an engine light on, even though Dodge did give me a letter stating what they did, the issue and that "this will not impair the truck to run badly or break down. It's an emissions code only."

Does anyone know what the p0442 means ran a test to see why engine light keeps comin on replaced fuel cap and it still stays on

engine light comes on my 97 dodge ram 1500, just replaced power steering hose, isn't overheating, new radiator, had engine run on an engine analyse, no cracks, plastic gas tank, had break line rubber line replaced. light still come on.

Found my problem on 2001 1500. Steel part of gas filler tube had rusted a pinhole before hose clamp on rubber tube portion. Removed steel fuel filler tube, removed rust, epoxied hole and painted tube. Put back together and check engine light is off. Check all parts to fuel tank for cracks, holes Good luck
