There is a problem with the ground somewhere along it's path. recommend checking the bolt that holds the black ground cable from the chassis to the battery terminal, the one that comes from the engine to the chassis as well, these have to be free of corrosion to be makin' a good contact...your dashes and gauges are resonsible for checkin' into the chassis ground which serves the dashboard..battery maintainance, hose off the top with a garden hose, then wirebrush the posts and the terminals, wear gloves and a facemask if you're sensitive to airbourne lead and acid...but establish SOLID ground from the chassis connection to the battery...please, case adjourned~

When they act up next time, play with dash light dimmer switch.

Dimmer won't do it. That dims the lights and the gauges are going out too. Bob-Roy is on the right ground connection track.

This just happened to me while driving. Started out car was really loud sounded like muffler possibly and then brakes went out now this as pictured. Headlights work but none of stuff on dashboard does. Also one of my back tail lights and one of the brake lights both are like shorted out and replacing the bulb doesnt seem to fix it or allow it to work.

I consulted with my regular repair show who advised they repaired a vehicle the previous week with the same symptoms. The cause of the problem was a faulty cell in the battery. Today I took my vehicle to Pep Boys for a battery check. The battery in the vehicle was a two year old Bosch battery. It came with an eight year prorated, first three year non-prorated battery.warranty. Sure enough, almost as soon as the technician started checking the battery, he determined if was faulty. They installed a new Champion, heavier duty battery (made by Johnson Controls) and away I went. I paid $25.00 for the battery upgrade and cleaning of the contacts. No issues so far.
