Front end noise & power steering problems in my 2000 Grand Cherokee Limited

Asked by Monaro_822 Sep 22, 2013 at 12:38 AM about the Jeep Grand Cherokee

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Power steering starting to go " Armstrong " on me when turning to the left. Gets hard to
steer , have to try & keep RPM up for it to work..I have replaced the steering pump 4
times already in the last 6 years - what gives ? The last 2 times work was done at
Large reputable Jeep dealers without any better results .I also get a groaning, tire
rubbing type of noise from the passenger side front end when turning right
predominantly. The last dealer to work on this problem said that the fluid had been
changed out, and in short order the noise would go away as I drove the vehicle
more.Seemed to work - almost, I still got the groaning/ rubbing noises occasionally  &
they just kept getting worse. What really bugs me is that the newly installed steering
pump would tend to fail about 3 - 4 months after waranty ran out. What am I looking at
as far as repairs are concerned ? Stephen Luchkanych

okay Stephen, I'd suggest the motor mounts or transmission mounts have lost it and are cracked and allowing the motor to move about...inspect them by placing a jack and woodblock under the oil pan...note any separation...see if it can pull the rest of the car up or simply separate~ you haven't said what year or I'd be shoppin' for ya~

odds are the steering gear is bad. If it turns easy to the rt, but hard to the left, its not the pump, as the pump doesnt care what direction you turn. it just supplies pressure. the switch valve IN the gear is the problem.

have you had the axles serviced? when changing fluid, use friction modifyer and synthetic75/90 fluid in the front. the transfercase uses special 247 fluid, rear diff, 75/140 and bottle of friction modifyer. Then do figure 8's to work the new fluid into the clutches. some times it takes a while. Go find large parking lot and do figure 8s till noise goes away....hope this helps....
