Why is my temperature gage showing the vehiclen overheating?

After what you have said if you start a vehicle and the gauge is "already stuck" at overheated, then the gauge is broken.

The first thing I would do is to disconnect the wire at the temp sender and see if it goes to cold. Usually, a shorted temp sender wire will show "over hot". Could the wire have been pinched? It's very rare for the indicator to fail.

Thank you for your post we did try disconnecting the wire but we still have the same problem. I am guess the indicator has failed.

my ford explorer is doing the same thing yours was doing barely getting up to the C on the gage. When I bought it to the shop, dumb me did not know it was low on coolant cause it did not leak . the gage was working . the guy put in a new radiator showed me the old one had a leak on the top seam. fine $400 later, the gage for the temperature on my dash runs cold, car runs fine but he said oh well now you need a new gage. the guy put it on the machine and said everything was working. Well how can that be right? I drive the car short distances ,but check the fluid each time before getting into car which is becoming a real pain. Any ideas?
