Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The thermostat went bad, my dad replaced it and
didn't bleed the air. I've added over a gallon of fluid
and it disappeared. He states that the temp gauge
stays at the cold and goes no higher until he turns
the heater on full blast then it start getting hot.
Could this be of air in the system or a heater core?
Also thought of head gasket but haven't checked to
see if there's coolant in the oil yet.
