What models of Volkswagen are flat towable behind a motorhome?

Asked by Allen2322 May 10, 2014 at 09:32 AM about the Volkswagen Beetle

Question type: Car Customization

We are considering buying a Volkswagen to tow behind our motorhome but are unsure which ones are towable. The owners manuals are not downloadable making the research difficult.

Get a front wheel drive VW and put it on a car dolly- this will leave the rear wheels freewheeling, which is what they are designed to do- flat towing is not good for any car, and will cost money in the long run- a car dolly is also more stable and safer especially at high speed-

contact a RV dealer. they deal with this on a regular basis, and have a good idea of what vehicles can be flat towed. they can also help with getting the vehicle properly outfitted to be towed.

Triple A says not to use a dolly. And besides that, you have more tires to buy. There are some model cars that were designed to be towed flat for this reason. Its also safer.

I don't think anyone really knows what is the best and safest way to tow a VW Beetle! Some say flat tow and others say dolly. If your not sure, then keep your opinion to yourself!

We have research for 6 months and keep coming back to the same mfg. JEEP 4x4 automatic. We would not use a car dolly as not only tires, registration, and insurance. Bad weather crawling around strapping down the tires. Too much work, and depending where you camp, you have to store you dolly off your site. Don't know about you but I'm pretty anal about where my equipment in parked and out of site.

Another thought Motorhome Magazine has a list of towable flat vehicles listed in the publication.

I love VW but just switched vehicles to a honda crv 2014 from a 2017 golf wolfsberg only due to wanting to flat tow. I would have had to use a dolly being that I am a woman I dont think I would have been able to do that by myself. Men have told me they got hernias from using a dolly. So I took the plunge to buy the honda. However, If I could have done that with my VW Which I loved I would have kept it.
