Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1year ago my Ford Bantam 1.3i rocam

want to start at all, checked spark was
ok,checked fuel pump,decided to
change fuel pump in tank with
aftermarket unit,still same,had ECU out
and checked ok.still won't
start,removed fuel injection
rail,everything ok.however with fuel rail
out and keep injectors outside of their
ports,try and start engine it
starts, moment you put it back engine
stalls, took it to friendly garage, they ask
old pump and reinstall it,disconnected
temp sensor it started and ran, they had
it on dianostics and show running very
rich still.so i could at least drive to
nearest Ford dealer 120km away from
our town, their finding a faulty fuel
pressure regulator,changed that it ran
well but wa always a bit on rich
side, they gave me the ideal pressure it
should run on,at full throttle 2bar and
at idle 1.5bar,went for just over one
year and i could smell it run rich,on
Friday exactly the same thing
happend,it stalled and don't want to
start, only start when removing fuel rail
and keep away from ports.can just
Mention that about two months ago
the original fuel pump did break down
and was replaced with new pump i had
from last time, and it ran well on up till
now,i am at witts end,can you help

Have you checked the condition of the fuel return pipes. If these are squoshed or damaged, you will get a rich mixture.

Is your ECU/PCM the type that was riveted in place or the one that was clipped into place ? Inr older PCM part number is 1S6D-12A650-BA 1.3 or 5S69-12A650-B? 1.3. ?

The one that is riveted in place

Have you had the Computer Box checked out separately as a separate unit ? We repair and refurbish these units and have a high success rate. If we find the unit is OK, Then I would start checking out the harness pluf at the Computer box and that there is no corosion at the terminals.

That was checked out, tested seperately and in another vehicle, terminals clean and sprayed as well

You seem to have quite a problem, Have you checked the part numbers of the 1300 injectors against the 1600 injectors. Also, who checked the Computer box for you as it sounds like it could have a 1600 program in it. Test of PCM was done by the person that do all PCMs for Ford South Africs, nothing was programmed on ,PCM and it ran perfectly for nearly one year, just running a little rich,

Further nothing has been changed onfuel injectors, still the original injectors this engine was supplied with when bought 4 years ago as brand new unit from Ford South Africa

I have exactly same problem 5 years Ford cannot sort out

If the engine is cranking and not or battling to start, check the main battery positive cable to the starter and the amperage draw and that the terminals are all clean. Check the Battery negative cable to the body and that the terminals are clean and secure. Fit an extra earth cable from the battery negative to the gearbox.
