CARB compliant catalytic converter

Asked by Guru97SPBP Feb 21, 2023 at 03:29 PM about the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I live in NY and need a new catalytic converter for my 2008 dodge grand
caravan to get it inspected (it's 3 months past due)  As of January 1st, 2023
all converters must be c.a.r.b compliant.  The cheapest one I can find is over
$900, compared to one that I can get for around $200 that would have been
fine to install on December 31st ugh.  I was talking to my mechanic who
owns his own shop and he states that he has not been sent a new inspection
station by NY so he is wondering if the non carb complaint converter would
still pass inspection. It's not like the vehicle knows the difference and as long
as the check engine light goes off then it should pass right?  Now I know
technically the mechanic should not do this but come on $800 difference is a
lot of money to some people right now, especially me and he understands
that.

Your vehicle must have the emission control equipment that was required at the time of manufacture, not what is in effect for the new model year! Your mechanic doesn't know what he's talking about. Look at the emission control sticker under the hood. If the sticker says "This vehicle is C.A.R.B. compliant" then yes, you need a C.A.R.B. compliant catalytic converter. But if it says "This vehicle conforms to Federal Emissions Standards" you do NOT need a C.A.R.B compliant catalytic converter! For 2008 you may or may not be C.A.R.B compliant. My 2000 Grand Prix, originally delivered to New Jersey is C.A.R.B compliant, so is my 2003 S10 Pick Up, originally delivered to Delaware, but my 2008 Grand Marquis, originally delivered to New Jersey is not. So whatever the emission sticker says, that's what you need!! Hope that helps! Jim
