My Mitsubishi Eclipse quit on me

My Mitsubishi Eclipse quit on me when I was backing into a parking spot. It will
make the sound when I turn the ignition but won't come on. It's not my
alternator or battery. A couple of days before this, I heard a loud noise, thought
I ran over something but nothing was in the road. Any ideas where I should
start looking?
