How do your remove the shifter from a 1963 grand prix?

Was hoping to remove the ball off the shift arm and pull it through the bottom. Can't get the ball off without breaking it

Thanks Jim. I did try using a heat gun on the knob. Didn't budge. I'll use your cold shot idea and see how that works.
