Is the opening where you shift gears supposed to be open? Seems like small items could fall in making shifting gears difficult and could cause damage. Please explain. Thanks.

There should be a boot that fits snugly over the shifter shaft (lever), and to the inside of the opening of the shifter.

If those two areas are closed off by the shifter boot, then thats the way it is.
