My starter on my 88 nissan 4x4 is not disingaging. Do it have to be shimed? When i back the starter bolts off it frees up. But when tight it locks the motor and it wont turn at all

I have an 87 D21 Nissan truck it will start and run but just a second then stop firing you can leave it over night and it will crank again. I have changed the coil got the same thing.
