My starter on my 88 nissan 4x4 is not disingaging. Do it have to be shimed? When i back the starter bolts off it frees up. But when tight it locks the motor and it wont turn at all

for sure its an alignment problem, but if it has been there for a long time and worked ok, then, why now is it binding unless a cracked starter housing is in order

Was this starter recently replaced? A lot of Nissan starters require a shim plate.
