If my 1971 Beetle automatic stick shift grinds when only putting in reverse, do I need to replace the control valve. Can't get into reverse at all now.

Sounds like it could be the small plate under the gearstick that engages it in gear. It's probably worn and the groove is no longer a groove. You can buy them fairly cheaply and as long as you have a good repair manual it's fairly easy to replace.
