cheapest would be finding a used engine. the problem is you won't know the condition and it could blow up on you in a day or a year! as for rebuilds, there are several places that rebuild vw motors. most will run you around a grand for a rebuilt longblock. if you want a complete engine then somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 grand. that's for a stock motor. it's not difficult to rebuild one yourself, but if you have never done it before you may be better off buying one already done. to rebuild one correctly you will need to find a good machine shop that can check out the case to make sure it's still good. other than that, and a couple special tools they are pretty easy to put together.

1998 beetle. Went for oil change. As soon as they completed it my check engine light came on. They checked code, was some emmissions code. Okay so the light goes out 2 days later. A few days later the car wont start, like it is out of gas, it's turning but not catching. I let it sit for 1/2 hr then it starts and the engine light back on. Everything fine for a few days then the same thing happens out of the blue. Just happened again to me. Car was fine, no light on then i go somewhere, park it, get back in and it wont start like its out of gas...let it sit for half hour and then it starts like nothing was wrong and the engine light back on now.
