iam not a mopar guy but my step son got a 71 charger left to him. By his passing grandfather what motor and tranny came factory or how do i identify the motor it has it is fast now. thanks

most of the chargers came with 318's for the base motor. but usually one the stock air cleaner housing tells what size motor is on the lid for the air filter housing. could also get the vin number off the firewall and research it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge_Charger_(B- body)#1971.E2.80.931974

if distributor is up front on theblock its a big block in back a small block,318 or 340.if there is no callout on the air cleaner lid (pie pan) its probably a 318 they only did callouts for 340,383,440 and hemi in 71.318 lids were plain.if you really want to get into it follow james advise by checking the vin number
