No mention of the Karmann edition?

Asked by Leala Aug 18, 2010 at 04:32 AM about the 1990 Volkswagen Cabriolet

Question type: General

I own a 1990 karmann edition Volkswagen cabriolet. This is my second one the first being a 1991 karmann edition. I noticed that the edition was not mentioned in the about section and was wondering if it has another name to it? The actual name on the car says Karmann edition.
thanks

All VW cabriolets are karmann editions. There really is no The body of all MK1 from 96-93 cabriolets were manufactured by Karmann. The only actual "editions" or styles of MK1 cabbies in the US are the base cabriolet, the Wolfsberg edition, the Carat, the golf Cabriolet, the Azur (special blue sold only in 88,) the Best Seller, the Boutique, and the Eitenne Einger designer edition. If you see a vehicle advertised as a Karmann edition, they probably arent very VW savvy.

OH ok :) thankyou very much. I was told since it had the golf body it was considered a karmann edition. So since last week, when a teenager smashed into my beautiful car, I've been dealing with it's value. I looked up 1990 Cabriolet on kelly blue book for the value and put 40k miles which it was just under. The total gave me just under 3k. Am I wrong in assuming a car with this mileage, condition, etc. is worth more? Or do these types of cars not retain much value? Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately the world has not recognized the value of these almost classics. You can sometimes get more if you can prove the value of the parts (i.e aftermarket stereo, upgrades etc.) Check out www.vwvortex.com some of the members there can offer u advice on proving the value of these babies. Sorry for your loss, was she a triple white?

yep :( white interior, white top, and white outside with white rims. It was truly a awesome car. It was my second one the other was a 1991 that was white top with red. It seems for some reason or another people who are driving just don't see the car. This last one was hit by a teenager and the one before was hit by a older lady. I truly love this type of car and such but with the back pain I don't know if I can afford to have another wreck. And I already know I won't find another one that is below 50k miles, well at least not around here. It was rather sad to see it in the kind of shape it was once the auto body was done looking at it. It's such a waste in my opinion.

Practically every Cabrio ever produced was/is a Karmann "edition" VW farmed the body manufacturing out to Karmann, the same people that produced the bodies on the Ghia. Your next Cabrio will also be a Karmann "edition"

There is no such thing as a "Karmann Edition". All cabriolets were built by Karmann for VW, and that is why they all have Karmann badges. Same for Beatle convertables, Sciroccos, Corrados, and of course Karmann Ghias.

There is also the collectors edition which is kind of rare and I believe only the 93 model

How much guts do these cars have? Does it drive quickly? And I was wondering if it would be able to do winter driving okay. I was considering buying one for 2000$ that had 180,000km on it. If anyone would be able to get back to me I would really appreciate it

@jared if you are still looking don't pay that much. for the millage and price that is awful. at that price you should find one with 130k at the high end. they arent the greatest in snow although you can get away with it. you have to remember it is a soft top convertible.

This is not an answer as much as a comment. I accidentally bumped into these questions while researching an oil pump for my 1985 Triple White VW Cabriolet with 32xxx miles on it (yes, thirty two thousand) I bought it brand-new in Jan. 1985. Was stored for many years and now being brought back to life. Everything is like new inc. the top. Does have new tires of course. No rust, no dents, no scratches, no teen drivers. Actually interior still has that new-car smell. And now I am in the process of doing a complete tune-up and all fluid change plus a/c conversion from R12 to R134A.

Can someone tell me how many Azur editions of the 1988 Cabrio were made. I just bought one and can't find much on the internet about it.

Only the 1990 to 1993 VW Cabriolet Convertibles were "Collectors Editions" and all were manufactured in Germany by Karmann. There should "Collector's Edition" badge on the lower rear of both front fenders. For the 93 edition, there are only little of 900 left, You can check on www.cabbyinfo.com. There you can find any answer on the the Cabriolets you can think of. Also, you can register your Collectors Edition there.

Old thread I know, but you guys seem to have a lot of knowledge on this model. So my question is, why does my 89 cabby have a limited edition badge in the sides?

Edwinh1396 I'm in the process of restoring my '87 and from what I've learned those badges indicate you have a Wolfsburg edition. Not sure how rare these are, but I get both compliments and offers everywhere I go! Hang onto that little beauty :)
