Gran Turismo Omologato means Grand Touring Homologated, meaning certified as Grand Touring by FIA(Federation Internationale d'Automobile). Some chided Pontiac for using the same name as the thoroughbred sports car Ferrari 250 GTO. Pontiac never submitted the GTO to FIA for certification. Neither did Ferrari.

One thing nobody has mentioned in all my searches is a car maker had to produce 100 examples of the model to be certified GTO for racing and street. I read that about 50+ years ago when I got into slot cars. I had a Monogram 1/32 Ferrari 250 GTO-64.
