fuel for 64 gto

Asked by GR8guy123 Feb 20, 2017 at 06:27 PM about the 1964 Pontiac GTO Convertible

Question type: General

How do I fuel my 64 GTO? The manual
calls for at least 100 octane fuel and I'm
sure it assumes leaded fuel. The highest
gas pump option here is 91 octane. I do
have a couple of other options airplane
fuel (100 octane low lead) and 112 racing
fuel.

You could try unleaded premium with a lead substitute and an octane booster added and see how it runs. If it pings a lot try retarding the timing a couple of degrees. Airplane fuel is really expensive in my neck of the woods but you could try it too.

Airplane has no road tax on it and it may be unavailable for motor vehicle use. I would have the heads redone with hardened valve seats and run 91 octane in it. I think the octane rating system has changed since 1964 so 91 octane might be enough, but it either needs leaded fuel or hardened valve seats.
