The most common cause for the CEL to light up is a gas cap either missing or loose or bad seal. But there are hundreds of reasons it will light up, your OBDII (On board Diagnostic) has found some fault, and to know why it's on it needs to be scanned for whatever fault has been detected. Many parts houses will scan it free
